How To Flash A Video Card For Mac Pro
Recently, I have been suffering some screen re-draw issues on my computer - a Mid 2010 Mac Pro which had an ATI Radeon HD5770 1024MB graphics card in it. So I had a chat with Rich at to see if upgrading my graphics card might help and he recommended an AMD R9 280X 3GB card which they do a special Mac compatible version of with a custom flashed ROM. AMD R9 280X 3GB Graphics Card Spec • Powerful Mac GPU with OpenCL acceleration • 1x DVI, 1x HDMI, 2x DisplayPort outputs • Compatble with 2008/2009/2010/2012 Mac Pro systems. • Compatible with OS X 10.9 and newer. • RAM Flashed by Create Pro to work with Apple Mac Pro computers I did the deed and bought the card from Create Pro and then got bogged down with a load of work and so it sat in its box on the side for a month.
I recently got an Intel-based Mac Pro (MacPro2,1). This is one of the systems that Apple abandoned way too soon. It came with an ATI Radeon X1900 card, and I was able to flash one of my old AMD Radeon HD5870 cards for use in it. If you want a fully featured Mac Pro-compatible graphics card and using AMD graphics sounds appealing, it's worth noting that Sapphire Technology has recently introduced the HD 7950 Mac Edition, which uses AMD's GCN architecture. It comes equipped with an HDMI port, two mini DisplayPorts and one Dual-Link DVI port, but be prepared to fork over $434.99 for the privilege. Hey, I dont blame you guys. Actually this is the reason I'm writing this thread. Flashing graphic cards are a hot thing, and with the newly announced Steam for Mac with latest Source games, and upcoming new Mac Pro graphic cards, this trend is not going away. And the only real information is scattered among thousands of posts.
3 Into 2 Won't Go Then last week I decided the job needed doing and so I opened up my Mac Pro and started to do the job and found two additional power leads came with the card, but here was my problem, there are only two additional power sockets on the Mac Pro motherboard and one of them is taken up with my Avid HDX card. So a quick call to produced the solution, I needed a splitter lead. Tom at Create Pro sent me the appropriate lead by UK Special Delivery so it would arrive the next day. I reconnected everything and put it all back together and powered it up and nothing, my screens were black. So I shut it down, took the cover off the Mac Pro, and pulled everything out again and had another go.
This time I was even more careful to seat the graphics card in the slot and then with the Mac Pro still open and on its side and booted it up and hey presto pictures. After shutting it down, next I put the Avid HDX card back in and tried it again - good news - still had pictures. I shut it down again and put everything back, the card retainer plate, the card support unit and put the Mac Pro back in the computer cupboard before booting it up one more time.
All was well.
The new MacBook Pros have two graphics cards. The good one.and the crappy one.
But the good one is hell on your battery, so you probably want to use that one only when you're plugged in. Here's a Quick Tip on how to switch graphics cards in the new MacBook Pro. Let's say I've been out and about using the power-friendly integrated graphics card, then I start playing a game and realize, hey it looks.bad. Go to system preferences.
Microsoft word document recovery microsoft word 2011 for mac. Click 'Utilities' from the drop-down menu and double-click the 'Keychain Access' icon to run the application. Click the 'Finder' icon on your dock, then click 'Go' at the top of your screen.
Choose Energy Saver. See where it says graphics?
Choose High performance. Here's the bummer: it requires you to log out. So save that gameplay, word doc or whatever else you have going on, then choose log out. OS X will log itself out, switch cards, and log back in. Then start your game back up and enjoy the better graphics.
That's it for this Quick Tip, I'm Tom Merritt with CNET.com.
Well since i successfully pimped out my Mac Pro with 2 8800GT PC cards I would like to write down a quick tutorial for anyone who doesn't want to pay $350 to Apple for 8800GT option. For this you will need to do/get following: IMPORTANT: Don't start doing things right away before you read every point in my guide here. 1x PC 8800GT card with G92 chip (all newer 8xxx series of cards are G92 like 8800GT or 8800GTS 512mb) - the one I'm working with is 2. You will need Mac 3. For FreeDos from their site 4. You will also need to download for flashing (5.63 version) 5.
And of course for the card 6. Next since you need to burn the above.iso you will need to make a bootable disc that will contain eveyrthing you downloaded. From nvFlash to FreeDOS.
The best app on PC to do that quickly would be. And point to.ISO file. Once you do that, you will see the files in the right window of UltraISO. You can now drag the remaining files from nvFlash folder to the root of that virtual disc (in right window) and also copy the mp8800gt.rom file you unzipped as well. When you drag the nvFlash from your 5.63 folder you can freely overwrite the files in UltraISO from the 8800GT_flash_toMac.zip files because they contain the older nvFlash.
